-Ebbe, Mary (11 Nov. 1833 - 8 July 1922)
Mrs. Chris Ebbe, one of the oldest residents of Neillsville, died at her home on Court Street, Saturday forenoon, July 8, aged 88 years, 7 months and 27 days. She was born in Denmark, Nov. 11, 1833, her maiden name being Mary Sorensen. She grew to womanhood in Denmark and was there married to Christian Ebbe, March 1, 1863. They sailed for America soon after and arrived in Jefferson county, Wisconsin, in June of that year. There they lived about a year and a half, and moved to Dane County, living about the same length of time there. They then moved to Wood County near Nasonville where they lived till 1882, when they bought a farm in Clark County. In 1887 Mr. and Mrs. Ebbe were chosen by the County Board to take charge of the County, and for 15 years they managed that institution. Mrs. Ebbe had charge of the household affairs and looked after the welfare and comfort of the inmates. So satisfactorily did Mr. and Mrs. Ebbe perform their work there, that when they resigned in 1902, the County Board passed a resolution praising the work they had done and expressing their regrets at their resignation. Both old and young who came under Mrs. Ebbe’s care were looked after as carefully and tenderly as if they had been her own parents or children. In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Ebbe moved to Oregon, where thye remained more then 7 years; returning in 1911, they bought a house near the high school building in Neillsville, which has been their home ever since. Over four years ago Mrs. Ebbe’s health failed and has been bed-ridden and an invalid since then most of the time being a great sufferer. During these years her husband has patiently cared for her day and night, that adopted son, George Ebbe, and his wife, assisting in every way possible. A number of good neighbor women have faithfully given their help whenever they could. Mrs. Ebbe had a strong and abiding faith in the Bible, which through all her years of suffering remained to uphold her until the end came.
She leaves her aged husband, a son John Ebbe, in Oregon, a daughter, Mrs. Mafy Brooks, in California, and an adopted son, George, in Neillsville, also 5 grandchildren. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church, Rev. W. T. Scott officiating.
